What is Taoism? Simply put, “The Natural Order of Things”. More on the subject, Pooh later…
Taoism is a Chinese philosophy and religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao, which is the source of all things and the ultimate principle underlying reality. The Tao is often described as “the way,” “the path,” or “the natural order of things.” Taoism teaches that by living in accordance with the Tao, we can achieve a state of peace, happiness, and enlightenment.
Some of the key principles of Taoism include:
- Wu wei: This means “doing nothing” or “effortless action.” It does not mean being lazy or inactive, but rather acting in a way that is in harmony with the Tao. This means letting go of our attachments and desires, and simply going with the flow of life.
- Yin and yang: This is the Taoist concept of two opposing forces that are complementary and interdependent. Yin represents the feminine principle, and yang represents the masculine principle. The balance of yin and yang is essential for harmony and balance in the universe.
- The three treasures: These are compassion, frugality, and humility. Taoism teaches that these qualities are essential for living a happy and fulfilling life.
Taoism is a complex and multifaceted philosophy, but it offers a way of living that can be both peaceful and fulfilling. If you are interested in learning more about Taoism, there are many books and resources available. You can also find Taoist temples and communities in many parts of the world.
Here is a simple story that illustrates the Taoist concept of wu wei:
A farmer is walking through his field when he sees a turtle struggling to cross a small stream. The farmer picks up the turtle and carries it to the other side of the stream. The turtle is grateful, and asks the farmer why he helped him. The farmer replies, “I did not help you. I simply removed an obstacle from your path.”
This story illustrates the Taoist belief that we should not try to control or force things to happen. Instead, we should simply remove obstacles and let the Tao take its course.
